Imagine a business with no hours, no sign, and no fixed location. The business’s offerings or services change daily, weekly, or even hourly. The business may exist for one night, a year, or maybe only in the owner’s mind. If the business does exist, often the only way you know this is through digital serendipity or the benevolence of a divine algorithm. If you are somehow granted the gift of knowledge, you must still somehow sign up for secret texts, master the timelines and requirements of the business’s founder, and if all else fails, beg for entry. Sometimes none of this will work or be required. The business may just decide to ignore all the rules it’s established and go Roman Coliseum-style, pitting you and your fellow patrons against one another in a battle for access, winner take all. “Winner”, however, suggests that you earned something for free, but in this case, victory only lends a chance to buy access. Sometimes you don’t even know what you’re buying, and while there are no guarantees, you must suspend disbelief and accept that what you are purchasing will be good. I have just described pretty much the foundation for every dystopian nightmare, and yet, I suspect, right now, you’re absolutely wondering, where do I sign up?
